HUGE OM ULTABATI SINGING BOWL
C Note (Root Chakra)

Huge Ultabati Singing Bowl

Old Tibetan Ultabati Singing Bowl
Weight 5 lb 8 oz (2.5 kilos).   32 x 15 ½ cm (approx. 12 ½ x 6 ¼ inches)

This is a HUGE and spectacular old Ultabati singing bowl with a wonderful and VERY LOW fundamental 2nd octave C sharp when struck with a padded mallet, and an absolutely growling C sharp OM when played around the rim with a heavy suede ringer.  With a hard wooden ringer the rim note changes to a lovely F sharp.  This is a particularly wonderful bowl to listen to close up…with one’s ear inside the basin!  With a little water inside, this bowl will also produce amazing fountains.

The excellent and clean condition of this hugely handsome bowl is indicative of one that has been put to ceremonial, ritual or musical use.  It has the classic Ultabati form with its out-turned lip, and is extremely well made.  Its fine even walls make it surprisingly light to hold considering its size.  It’s a real eye-catcher too, with tremendous dark mottled leopard-spot hammer marks on the outside, and a beautiful bright golden interior.  The large teak and suede ringer (illustrated) is included in the price, together with a large brocade cushion.

PRICE: £625.00 (US$990)

Note: As this is an unusually heavy item there may be a surcharge to cover the additional cost of shipping, and the buyer may later be invoiced at cost for any shipping/insurance shortfall.

This old Remuna singing bowl with its fine walls and bulbous belly has a really lovely voice…a low B fundamental when struck with a padded mallet.  It sings the same B note when played around the rim with a suede ringer, but with a fifth octave E accompaniment.    The high E becomes the dominant note when a wooden ringer is used.  This bowl also has some fountain abilty.

This is an attractive bowl with a lovely voice, and in good clean condition.  A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included in the price.

PRICE: £195.00 (US$310)

Birthday Bowl – Customer Feedback (Feb 2012)

What a bowl, how many lifetimes has it been about?  Definitely headed to what I dreamed of after discovering bowls.  I take it there are heavier bowls still, they are magic!  This is one wonderful, magical bowl (I will be smiling for years) I am glad to have for this part of its life.  Thank you yet again, what timing! DB (UK).

VERSATILE MANIPURI SINGING BOWL
C Note (Root Chakra)

Manipuri Singing Bowl

Antique Tibetan Singing and Talking Bowl
Weight 1 lb 14 oz (852g).   23 x 7 ½ cm (approx. 9 x 3 inches)

This is a large and versatile antique Manipuri bowl with a solemn low octave fundamental C note when struck with a padded mallet or played around the rim with a coarse suede ringer.  However, when played with a smooth wooden ringer the rim-tone changes to a piercing 5th Octave F Sharp accompanied by a quieter low C harmonic…a very interesting duel sound.  With practice a variety of other notes can also be brought out…and this bowl has a good talking voice and some fountain ability too.

It has the shallow low profile and decoration one associates with the Manipuri form…including sun motifs (dots within a circles) around the lip and also within concentric circles, now worn rather faint, on the bowl’s floor.  Another pair of inscribed circles are high up on the inside wall, about an inch below the rim.  The outside of the bowl retains much of its original hammered surface, while the inside is now smooth to the touch.  The bowl has a bright golden colour and is virtually free of blemishes.  A double-ended teak and suede ringer is included in the price.

PRICE £225.00 (US$355)

A HUGE 12" JAMBATI SINGING & FOUNTAIN BOWL - E Note (Solar Plexus/Crown Chakras)

Tibetan Jambati Singing Bowl

Huge Antique Jambati Singing and Fountain Bowl
Weight 4 lb 10 ¾ oz (2.12 kilos).   30 x 13 cm (approx. 12 x 5 inches)

This is a HUGE and handsome antique Jambati Singing Bowl…one of the largest we’ve seen, and a real rarity these days.  When struck with a padded mallet it has a fantastically beautiful, almost haunting, low pulsating fundamental…a third octave E flat voice with a long sustain.  It sings the same E flat when played around the rim with a heavy suede ringer BUT when played with a hard wooden ringer the rim note becomes a powerful middle B.  With a little water inside, this bowl will also produce great fountains.

At well over 2 kilos, nearly 5 pounds, this is a large heavy bowl to hold and play for any length of time, and the ‘weaker sex’ may find it too heavy and tiring to balance on the palm.  However, it’s perfectly possible to balance the bowl on a cushion and strike or ring it in situ because it’s weight holds it steadily in place.

The bowl is very well constructed and in good clean condition for its age.  It has the classic curved Jambati form and a lovely profile.  It has an exceptionally wide and level lip with two micro grooves, some simple decorative banding on the outer wall forming a collar below the rim, and a pair of engraved concentric circles inside the basin.  There are some subtle hammer markings on the external walls that catch the light and add surface interest to this handsome antique bowl, which has a bright golden colour.  This is a remarkable and impressive Jambati singing bowl by any standard.  It has a wonderful voice and will undoubtedly enhance any collection.

A large heavy suede ringer, and a smaller double-ended teak and suede ringer are included in the price.  The egg is NOT included :-)

PRICE: £645.00 (US$1,000)

Note: As this is an unusually heavy item there may be a surcharge to cover the additional cost of shipping, and the buyer may later be invoiced at cost for any shipping/insurance shortfall.

TINY ANTIQUE NAGA BOWL - F Note (Heart Chakra)

Antique Naga Singing Bowl

Antique Himalayan Naga Singing and Healing Bowl
Weight 14 ½ oz (409g).   10 x 6 ½ cm (approx. 4 x 2 ½ inches)

This is one of our smallest antique pedestal or Naga singing bowls, but despite its diminutive size it packs a very powerful punch!  It has a fantastic loud and penetrating fifth octave F voice and is incredibly easy to play.  This is a heavy little bowl, solidly constructed, with thick even walls and a good strong lip with a faint micro-groove.  The smooth outer wall is finely decorated with five engraved lines forming a collar just below the rim.  It is in excellent condition and would look great displayed as an infant between two larger Nagas.

Naga singing bowls are relatively rare and in short supply.  They are very popular with sound therapists and healers as the bowls can be easily gripped by the pedestal and played at any angle or distance above or below a client.  Feng Shui practitioners sometimes use them for space clearing.

PRICE: £140.00 ($220)

ANTIQUE NAGA BOWL - E Note (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Antique Naga Singing Bowl

Antique Himalayan Naga Singing and Healing Bowl
Weight 1 lb 14 oz (851g).   16 x 11cm (approx. 6 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches)

This is a large good quality antique pedestal or Naga Singing Bowl with a long inscription and multiple harmonics.  Its primary note is a wonderful mid octave E flat but several other harmonics are present and can be brought to the fore with a little experimentation and practice.

This is a solidly constructed bowl, with even walls and a regular lip.  The smooth outer wall is nicely decorated with three pairs of engraved lines forming a collar just below the rim.  The basin is nicely curved and balanced, the widest part of this bowl being around its middle.  The colour is a slightly silvery gold.

A particularly interesting feature is the long punched-dot inscription on the bowl’s outer wall, just below the engraved collar.  It’s significance is unknown…it may commemorate an event, be a dedication, or perhaps the name of the bowl’s owner.  Whatever the meaning or purpose, this Naga bowl has been valued and well cared for throughout its life, and is in good condition for its age.  A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

PRICE: £310.00 (US$487)

RARE CONCERT PITCH ANTIQUE MANI SINGING BOWL - E Note (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Rare Antique Mani Singing Bowl

Rare 16th – 18th Century Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl
Weight 4 lb 8 ½ oz (2.06 kilos).   19 (rim 17 ½ ) x 10 ½ cm (approx. 7 ½ x 4 ¼ inches)

A superb example of the rare antique Mani or Charma form of Himalayan singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This is a large and heavy bowl with an unusual and very subtle variation on the classic Mani form.  It has a slightly hipped midriff that has the effect of creating a subtle waistline halfway around the bowl.  This is only noticeable when viewing the bowl in profile.

It is exceptionally well made, with smooth outer walls, a strong wide even lip, and a clean and very capacious basin.  Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play, and this one is no exception.  It has a fantastic voice too…a powerful and penetrating fifth octave E flat that is virtually concert pitch!  This bowl is so clean and stain-free it’s hard to believe that it has been around for between 200 and 400 years!

A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

PRICE: £365.00 (US$565)  SOLD

Note: As this is an unusually heavy item there may be a surcharge to cover the cost of shipping to distant non-European destinations.  The buyer will later be invoiced at cost for any shipping/insurance shortfall.

Antique Mani bowls are increasingly difficult to source nowadays and have therefore become very collectable.  They have a strong physical presence, a powerful voice and a character all their own.  Some people like to play them in pairs for their unique harmonic qualities.  Their distinctive sound and appearance contrasts nicely with other bowl forms and will add interest and variety to any collection.

ANTIQUE TIBETAN MANIPURI SINGING AND TALKING BOWL

Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl

Antique Tibetan Manipuri Singing and Talking Bowl
Weight 1 lb 13 oz (825g).   21 x 7 cm (approx. 8 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches)

An antique Tibetan Singing Bowl with the classic shallow or low Manipuri profile.  This is an attractive bowl, quite large for a Manipuri, with fine walls that gently splay towards the rim.  There is a decorative ribbon of suns (circle with a dot in the centre) and an interesting band of ritualistic or fine-tuning gashes encircling the outer wall just below the rim, and two concentric circles inscribed on the inside floor of the basin.  The bowl has a nice golden colour with some subtle hammer markings that have been worn smooth over the years.

This antique bowl has a particularly nice third octave fundamental E singing voice with multiple overtones, and with a little water inside, a lively talking voice.  A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

PRICE: £190.00 (US$295)

RARE ANTIQUE MANI SINGING BOWL

Antique Mani Singing Bowl

Rare 16th – 18th Century Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl
Weight 3 lb 13 oz (1.73 kilos).   19 (rim 17 ½ ) x 10 cm (approx. 7 ½ x 4 inches)

A very nice example of the rare antique Mani or Charma form of Himalayan singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This is a large and heavy bowl with the classic Mani form…perhaps a little more bulbous and inward sloping than some.  It is well made, with smooth outer walls, a good even lip, and typical Mani decoration in the form of simple engraved bands just below the outer rim, around the belly, and several concentric circles on the inside floor.  This Mani bowl is in good clean condition for its age (200 – 400 years) and virtually free of stains and blemishes.  Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play, and this one is no exception.  It sings a lovely fifth octave D note.  A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

PRICE: £335.00 (US$519)

Note: As this is an unusually heavy item there may be a surcharge to cover the cost of shipping to distant non-European destinations.  The buyer will later be invoiced at cost for any shipping/insurance shortfall.

Antique Mani bowls are increasingly difficult to source nowadays and have therefore become very collectable.  They have a strong physical presence, a powerful voice and a character all their own.  Some people like to play them in pairs for their unique harmonic qualities.  Their distinctive sound and appearance contrasts nicely with other bowl forms and will add interest and variety to any collection.

Antique Tibetan Manipuri Singing Bowl
Weight 15 ½ oz (438g).   15 x 5 ½ cm (approx. 6 x 2 ½ inches)

A very nice quality antique Tibetan Manipuri Singing Bowl that’s quite weighty for its size.  It sits solidly and comfortably in the palm of the hand and is the perfect shape and weight for playing without tiring.  This bowl looks good, it’s clean and bright, and everything about it spells quality.  It is very well forged with thicker than average walls that splay slightly towards the rim.  The outer walls have pleasant hammer markings that catch the light, while the inside is smooth.  The lip is flat on top and decorated with sun motifs (punched circles with dots in the middle).  This motif is continued within an inscribed circular band on the floor of the bowl, the centre of which contains a hand engraved five-sided star.  The sun motifs are surrounded by a pair of concentric circles, while another decorative pair can to be found higher up closer to the inside rim.

Musically, this Manipuri bowl is very versatile, with multiple harmonics.  The fundamental note is a mid octave D when struck with a padded mallet, but the rim note is variable, ranging from C sharp to a fifth octave G sharp and more.  A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

Antique Jambati Singing Bowl

Large 19th Century Tibetan Jambati Singing and Fountain Bowl
Weight 3 lb 7 ½ oz (1.58 kilos).   24 ½ x 13 cm (approx. 9 ¾ x 5 inches)

This is an outstanding and beautiful large antique Jambati singing AND fountain bowl.   The sound of this lovely old bowl is rather special, particularly when struck with a padded or soft mallet, when it sings a fabulous, sonorous, and pulsating low third octave F Sharp with a sustain that just goes on and on forever.  It sings the same F Sharp note when played around the rim with a ringer and, with a little water inside, this bowl produces excellent fountains.

This 19th century bowl is extremely well made.  It has a marvelous shape and is very handsome to look at…with strong clean lines, subtle hammer marks, a great lip, and engraved bands forming a collar just below the outer rim, and concentric circles on the inside floor.  It has a lovely golden colour and is virtually free of stains and blemishes.  The inside is especially nice.

ANTIQUE MANIPURI

Antique Manipuri Singing Bowl

Antique Tibetan Manipuri Singing Bowl
Weight 1 lb 13 oz (820g).   21 x 7 cm (approx. 8 ¼ x 2 ¾ inches)

An antique Tibetan Singing Bowl with the classic shallow or low Manipuri profile with fine walls that gently splay towards the rim.  This fairly large Manipuri bowl has been well used over the years.  There are some original hammer markings remaining low down on the exterior walls, but the inside has been worn smooth and any decorative elements have all but disappeared.  Regular cleaning probably accounts for its smooth finish and rather nice golden colour.

The simplicity of form is offset by a complexity of sound.  It has a lovely low third octave C fundamental, and a pulsating F sharp rim note with interesting and variable harmonics.  This bowl also has some fountain ability.  A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

PRICE: £165.00 (US$432)

VERY RARE ANTIQUE LINGAM BOWL

Antique Lingam Bowl

Very Rare 17th – 18th Century Antique Tibetan Lingam Singing Fountain Bowl
Weight 2 lb. 7¾ oz (1.13 kg).   24 x 9 cm / approx. 9½ x 3½ inches

Lingam bowls are without doubt the rarest of all Himalayan singing bowls.  Named after the male principle, they are thought to have been made for Tibetan ritual and ceremonial use, and have an amazing purity of sound.  Lingam bowls seldom come on the market (it’s usually ‘finders-keepers’) but when they do they are quickly snapped up at premium prices by avid collectors.

This is a superb example of a very large and beautiful antique lingam singing bowl in excellent condition.  It is slightly wider and shallower than usual and this may account for its exceptional fountain ability.  Despite its great age this bowl is virtually free of blemishes and stains, and has a wonderful antique gold colour with some patina.  The basin has a large and perfectly formed lingam (central protrusion) surrounded by 2 concentric circles, and on its flat underside a perfect navel.  It has an excellent inward over-hanging lip and a simple decorative collar comprising 2 concentric circles on the outer wall just below the rim.

The primary note is a stunning third octave E Flat with a huge and sonerous sustain and, with a little water inside, this bowl is capable of producing spectacular fountains.  An exceptional bowl – get it quick!

PRICE: £620.00 (US$990)  SOLD

Customer Feedback November 2012

REDUCED - SAVE £50 ($80)

Antique Tibetan Singing Bowl

Antique Tibetan Singing and Talking Bowl
Weight 2 lb 2 ½ oz (979g).   18 x 9 ½ cm (approx. 7 x 3 ¾ inches)

This is a good-looking medium-size high-walled antique Thadobati singing AND fountain bowl with an excellent pulsating low fundamental 3rd octave A note.  It is an attractive and sound bowl in every respect save for a small flaw; an old and tiny 3mm nick, just below the rim on the outer wall.  This is clearly visible in the above photo, but in reality barely noticeable, and unseen when we bought the bowl in the late 1990s.

Fortunately it has no impact on the sound of the bowl when struck, or when played around the rim, as it misses the lip completely…but it does mean that one has to sweep the ringer at a slightly lower angle to avoid feeling the nick.  This is extremely simple and easy to do, as it requires only the smallest adjustment to the playing angle.

Nonetheless I feel that a reduction in price is in order, and for those not bothered by a minor cosmetic imperfection, this otherwise excellent antique singing and fountain bowl will represent an amazing bargain!  A double-sided teak and suede ringing stick is included in the price.

REDUCED PRICE: £140.00 (US$220) - normally £190.00 ($300)

Large Antique Tibetan Singing Bowl
Weight 2 lb 14¾ oz (1.33 kg).   25 x 11½ cm (10 x 4½ inches)

It’s sometimes hard to resist a really stunning antique singing bowl such as this beauty; it just seems to tick all the boxes.  This lovely bowl (Circa 18th Century) has a really classic form with its gently sloping sides and small base, and the look and feel of great antiquity with its subtle patina and hammer marks inside and out.  It has a rich golden bronze colour and is beautifully forged, with a strong even lip, and a nice decorative band forming a collar around the top of the outer wall.  It is in great condition too, clean (not polished), with hardly a mark or stain despite its age.  It’s obviously been a treasured possession and very well cared for.

Its good looks are matched by a wonderful sound…a sonorous third octave C with a huge sustain and a fantastic pulsating low second octave B overtone.  This Tibetan bowl simultaneously, and rhythmically, sings and growls!   Antique bowls of this size and quality are few and far between, and eagerly sought by sound therapists, musicians, collectors and others seeking something special.

This is a large bowl, but it’s not particularly heavy for its size, making it relatively comfortable to hold and play for quite a while without tiring.  A large teak and suede striker/wand is included in the price.

Antique Singing Bowl

Antique Tibetan Singing Bowl
Weight 8 ¼ oz (235g).   11x4½cm / approx. 4 ¼x 1 ¾ inches

An unusually low (shallow) steep-sided little antique singing bowl with a primary note of B.  It’s very well made with nicely proportioned walls, a dark antique colour with some patina, and a flat bottom which keeps it from turning in the hand when playing.  There is a pattern of dots just below the rim, and the centre of the bowl features 6 decorative concentric circles in two groups of 3.   Altogether, a very nice little bowl with a character all its own!  A small double-ended teak and suede striker/playing wand is included in the price.

Weight 1 lb. 6 oz (624g).   16½ x 8½ cm / approx. 6½ x 3¼ inches

There’s no doubting this old bowl has been through the wars!  It looks like it’s been it’s been in daily use for 100 years or more.  It’s been worn smooth with use, dropped, battered and bruised, scrubbed and most definitely loved!

This medium-size high-walled antique bowl has tons of history and character, and despite its hard life has somehow managed to retain its strength, its dignity and its lovely voice…a penetrating third octave F Sharp with a high octave C.   It has a great colour, a hint of decoration on the inside floor, and a particularly interesting underside with unusual fold-like marks of unknown origin.  Make no mistake, this is  still an attractive looking bowl!

Antique Tibetan Fountain Bowl

STAND WELL BACK!

A Large Antique Tibetan Fountain and Singing Bowl (18th C)
Weight 4 lb 3oz (1kg 91g).  26.5x12.5/10.5x5 inches

This fantastic Himalayan Fountain bowl has been in our collection since the early 1990s when large and spectacular bowls were easier to source.  We chose it for its stunning good looks and its beautiful quality of sound…a pulsating G Sharp with multiple overtones and a long sustain.

Twenty years ago we knew nothing about fountain and talking bowls; still less about how these strange esoteric attributes or abilities might be employed in shamanic practice, or as an aid to meditation.  So it is only in recent years that we have come to learn about this bowl's unique watery gifts and just how special it is!

This is certainly one of the very best antique fountain bowls we have come across in 25 years of collecting.  When hand-held and played with a little water inside it first creates a myriad of vibrant surface patterns that slowly chase each other around the perimeter of the bowl in rhythmic waves of energy…before suddenly exploding into a rush of spectacular (and noisy) fountains!  Stand well back!

This is a large and nicely proportioned steep-sided bowl, circa 18th century, with a relatively small base and minimal decoration.  It is very evenly forged, with a strong gradated lip, and very pretty hammer marks inside and out.  It has been well treated over the years and is virtually unblemished.  Regular gentle cleaning by its previous Himalayan owners probably accounts for its stunning good looks…a lovely antique golden bronze colour with lots of patina.  It’s very pleasing to the eye as well as the ear!

This is an exceptional top-quality fountain bowl that anyone would be thrilled to own.  A double-ended 19cm teak and suede striker/wand is included in the price.

PRICE: £545.00 (US$895)  SOLD

Antique Mani Singing Bowl

Rare 17th – 18th Century Antique Tibetan Mani Singing Bowl
Weight 1 lb 12 ¼ oz (803g).   14-16 x 9 cm (approx. 5 ½ - 6 x 3 ½ inches)

A nice example of the rare antique Mani or Charma form of Himalayan singing bowl.  These heavy old bowls are characterized by their flat bottoms, bulbous bellies with thick inward sloping walls, and generous lips.  They have the classic begging-bowl shape, and date from the 16th to 18th century when they ceased to be made.

This particular bowl is in very good clean condition considering that it’s between 200 and 400 years old!   It’s also unusually small for a Mani bowl, being almost half the size and weight of the average for this type of bowl.  It has all the classic characteristics associated with antique Mani bowls, with lots of decoration both inside and out including multiple micro-grooves around the lip and engraved banding below the outer rim, as well as around the middle of the body, with more concentric circles on the inside floor of the basin.  This bowl has been extremely well maintained, as the abundance of decoration is sharp and intact.  Furthermore there’s no evidence of dents or damage to the walls, and the bowl is virtually free of discoloration and staining.  This is one of the smallest and cleanest Mani bowls we’ve seen or collected.  It has an unpolished dull silvery-gold colour and the look and feel of antiquity.

This Mani bowl also has a fantastic voice – a 5th octave C sharp that’s virtually concert pitch (as measured by my Korg orchestral tuner).  Mani or Charma bowls are self-amplifying and extremely easy to play, and this one is no exception. A double-ended teak and suede striker/ringer is included in the price.

A really delightful and rare Mani bowl in an even rarer size!

PRICE: £245.00 (US$385)

Antique Mani bowls are increasingly difficult to source nowadays and have therefore become very collectable.  They have a strong physical presence, a powerful voice and a character all their own.  Some people like to play them in pairs for their unique harmonic qualities.  Their distinctive sound and appearance contrasts nicely with other bowl forms and will add interest and variety to any collection.
